ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) is all set for its moon mission today. If all goes to plan, India will script history by becoming the first nation to make a soft landing on the Moon’s south pole.

The landing process for Chandrayaan-3 lander ‘Vikram’ begins today at 5:20 pm IST and is expected to touch the surface by 6:04 pm IST.

It becomes more important and crucial when Russia’s ‘Luna-25' crashed onto the Moon’s surface two days ago. It was also attempting to make a soft landing near the south pole of the Moon.

Let’s hope and pray for the best.

10 Key Things About The Moon Mission:

  1. Chandrayaan-3 is India’s second attempt to make a soft landing on the Moon’s south pole.
  2. Chandrayaan-3 takes around 39 days to reach the Moon as India doesn’t have a powerful rocket to hurl the spacecraft directly into the Moon orbit.
  3. The mission was launched on July 14, 2023 from Sriharikota, Satish Dhawan Space Station, Andhra Pradesh, India.
  4. It contains a rocket ‘LVM3 M4’, a lander module ‘Vikram’ and a rover ‘Pragyan’, which will roam on the Moon surface for next 14 days.
  5. Pragyan rover works on solar power and can’t handle extreme cold. Therefore, It will start working as the Sun rises on the Moon.
  6. The dark side of the Moon doesn’t mean it remains dark eternally. It just means that it is explored less than other side of the moon, especially the equator.
  7. The south pole of the Moon is believed to have frozen water and a suitable place to set up the space station for further space exploration.
  8. Chandrayaan-3 is cost around $74 million (Rs 660 crore) against Hollywood movie Interstellar which had a budget of $165 million (Rs 1368 crore).
  9. Four countries including Russia, Japan, Israel, and India failed to make a soft landing on the Moon in recent times.
  10. Chandrayaan-2, ISRO previous mission, made a hard landing on the Moon after it failed to decrease its thrust while landing there.
